Home decor arrives on Capitol Hill Tuesday, when Newell Turner, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful, and Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) will hold a Washington press conference to encourage consumers to buy American-made home products in order to stimulate the economy and boost job growth.

Though 227,000 jobs were added to the economy in February,according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate still stands at a staggering 8.3 percent. Turner, Hagan and leading members of the furniture manufacturing industry hope to expand the American-made home furnishings business to create more U.S. jobs. Worldwide, home decor is a multibillion-dollar market.

The domestic furniture industry itself is relatively small, but Hagan says it has a notable impact on American jobs, especially in her home state of North Carolina.

"Our state has a rich history in the furniture industry, and I am working to do everything I can to support and keep those jobs here in America," Hagan tells Stylelist Home in an email. "Many Americans buy American products as a way to support our economy as it recovers, and furniture is no exception."

"There's no better time than ever to promote American industries," Turner says. Moreover, he adds, "There's nothing more important than creating a home that makes you feel good and safe."

To strengthen his call for American support of domestic products, Turner is planning to discuss the findings of a new survey conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, which questioned 1,000 adults about their furniture preferences and shopping habits. Some 91 percent of participants said they would choose to buy American-made furniture over products manufactured abroad. However, almost half of those surveyed either had recently bought foreign-made products or were unsure of their purchased item's origin. These findings suggest there is huge potential for growth for the American furniture industry.

With international retailers like IKEA offering competitive low prices, we understand why buyers might still opt for non-American-made products. Plus, international retailers employ a substantial number of U.S. workers. But Turner says there are affordable options made right here in the United States.

Additionally, there is the "strong unquestioning level of quality" of American furniture ensured by federal safety regulations, Turner argues, noting that even the Chinese want American-made furniture "because they know the quality is guaranteed."

If the quality and accessibility of American furniture have not persuaded you, there's also the environment to consider. "From a green perspective, you're lowering the carbon footprint of things," Turner says because U.S.-made furniture doesn't have to travel as far to your home.

Turner's efforts for American-made furniture don't end with the Tuesday press conference. The April issue of House Beautiful features the growing furniture and design sector in Southern California, with brands likeCisco Brothers, Elite Leather and William Haines Designs (the company founded by a former silent movie actor) shipping products across the country.

Although we agree that buying American-made anything is important to our economy, we believe the largest obstacle to buying locally remains the price. Budget is often the single biggest factor when it comes to choosing furniture. So although we may want the gorgeous coffee table handcrafted in California and made with locally harvested wood, if our budget doesn't allow it, we may just stick to our $20 Ikea Lack table ... for now.

Furniture Fresh from South Central L.A.

In our October 2011 issue we're spotlighting all of our favorite American-made design. To lend a hand, we've asked Michael and Ruth Storc of the great site Design Patriot to share their top Made in the USA finds with us. This week, they spotlight Cisco Home, a sustanable furniture company based in South Central Los Angeles.

When he was in his early twenties, Cisco Pinedo began making custom furniture for his neighbors out of his home garage in South Central Los Angeles. As his business grew, he started buying abandoned buildings on an industrial strip of Western Avenue in the downtrodden neighborhood where he started. Cisco Home still makes all their upholstered goods, case goods, and their welded and hand-blown glass lighting in Los Angeles (under the name Cisco Brothers), employing over 100 workers in their factories alone. Every item in the huge range of stylish pieces is made with an eye on sustainability and green practices.

California Look: Chairs by Gregg Fleishman, Cisco, Sidecar, Marmol Radziner

The California Look poll, Round 8: Indoor chairs

These days, how a chair is made can be just as important as how it looks. We continue our California Look 2011 poll by asking you to consider these four California designs. Vote for your favorite and tell us why you think it speaks to the idea of modern living.

And the nominees are ...

A. Gregg Fleishman's Lumberest dining chair. Culver City architect Fleishman, no stranger to L.A. at Home, uses interlocking parts to create a chair that is cut from a single piece of 4-by-8-foot laminated plywood, reducing waste. It ships flat and unfolds for use. The intricately patterned design provides a springy seat and back for comfort.

B. Katso from Cisco Home. Talk about modern times. The Los Angeles firm has made an admirable attempt to keep manufacturing local and in many ways symbolizes the challenges facing the furniture industry. Locally made, the Katso stool is a wonderful example of fashionable industrial design: a tractor-style seat carved from solid wood and set on a steel base.

C. The Maria chair from Sidecar Furniture in the Highland Park neighborhood of L.A. Owner David Johnson not only designed the chair but also builds them himself. He uses "urban forested" walnut for a frame constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, and he weaves the cane seat and back by hand. The result is exceptionally strong and stylish -- an example of classic craftsmanship that we think speaks to the desire for handmade work in a manufactured-in-China world.

D. The dining chair from Marmol Radziner. The Los Angeles architecture firm's achievements include the restoration of Richard's Neutra's Kaufmann house in Palm Springs, the design and production of prefab homes and a line of furniture. The firm's Dining Group has a strong architectural presence and is made to order from solid walnut or maple.

To get a sense of how chic and fabulous a greener lifestyle can look today, you need only attend Dwell on Design. The West Coast's biggest design event took over a chunk of the Los Angeles Convention Center last weekend to showcase the latest in great design — much of it sustainable, green, and enviably beautiful.

Case in point: The Ecofabulous MODERN LIVING Showhouse, which tricked out one ofpieceHomes' eco-friendly modular houses with gorgeous sustainable furniture, energy-efficient appliances, and other green living accoutrements — down to pretty tableware made from natural and reclaimed materials!

If you saw the showhouse and want to live in it, you can actually own it — if you're the highest eBay bidder! The home will be auctioned off, so get your bids in between July 5 and 15 — with the extra bonus being that what you pay for the house will be donated to Global Green USA.

Attendees also got to sit on Cisco Homes' sustainable furniture, look at big, all-paper structures from molo, learned about the humanitarian work of Architecture for Humanity, snapped up energy-efficient LED lamps from Koncept, and heard from speakers and panelists about green consumerism, eco-friendly design, sustainable transportation, and many other pressing green topics.

Expect to hear more about Dwell on Design in the coming days from MNN's Home blogger Matt Hickman, who hit the show on Friday, when author of "Cradle to Cradle" William McDough gave his keynote!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions; we even got some great spots to visit in the East Bay now. In honor of Earth Day this Friday, here are the five best places to shop for eco-friendly goods in SF.

For everything else: Branch (345 Ninth St., Ste. 202, 415-626-1012) Even if it weren't earth-friendly, Branch would be one of the best boutiques in town. This gifting haven carries eco accessories, home accents, kitchenware and tabletop items, bed, bath, and baby products, and much more.

They continue to be a leader, making beautiful creations that are also responsibly made.

While crusing by one of their stores recently, we caught a glimpse at their store window.

It bared our name. And made us blush...maybe even swoon for a second.
